The Shipping News by E. Annie Proulx

| July 04 |

Forget what I mentioned earlier – thank heavens – because this book immediately picked up in terms of atmosphere. What I thought would have to be a heart-wrenching piece of work instead became a wonderful piece of work that knew how to handle its reader. Meaning, Proulx knew how not to scare me off while saying what was needed to be said. This review is going to be a joy to write.

My God, this is one of the most painful books I’ve ever attempted to read, not because of poor writing or storytelling, but because of the gut-wrenching angst that began on the first page. I’m worried that the entire book will make me feel this hopeless and depressed, and I’m terrified of even attempting to finish.

The Study Trilogy (Poison Study, Magic Study, Fire Study) by Maria V. Snyder

Began and completed reading all three books after finishing off The Shipping News yesterday. I have to say it was pretty interesting, with many similarities with Tamora Pierce’s The Circle of Magic quartet. Well-written, engaging, and light to read. The final book, perhaps, brought on some confusion and was harder to read than the others, but eventually sorted itself out.
